The Department is responsible for public health protection and service. It has regulatory, planning, and policy responsibilities as well as oversight responsibilities for health care institutions. It is responsible for many aspects of public health, including hospital financing, multicultural and minority health, environmental laboratory services, and preparedness for the health related aspects of terrorism.
The Department was one of the thirteen departments established under the Constitution of 1947. The Department was reorganized in 1996 to become the Department of Health and Senior Services, but was reorganized again in 2012 to become the Department of Health. Some programs and services for seniors were transferred to the Department of Human Services at this time.

- Senior Services and Health Systems oversees the Division of Aging and Community Services, Division of Health Facilities Evaluation and Licensing, Division of Senior Benefits Utilization & Management, and the Office of Health Care Financing.
