Smithville as we see to today never existed prior to 1949. The town was created by the Noyes family to attract more customers to their restaurant, The Smithville Inn.
The original Smithville Inn was built as a private home in 1787 by James Baremore. Because houses were few and far between and the Baremore hospitality became well know in south Jersey the stages coaches began to use the inn as a stop. As a result, the house was expanded to 6 times its original size.
With the growth of the railroads and less traveling by coach the need for the stop diminished . As a result, the inn feel into disrepair and was closed.
In 1949 the Noyes Family purchased the old inn and restored it as a restaurant.
To attract more attention to the Inn, the Noyes Family purchased a number of 19th century buildings and moved them to the site creating the Historic Town Pine Barrens town of Smithville.
Today the town of Smithville has been designated as a Historic site by the United States Government.
