Abstract

Description

Normally the first shots fired by the line was a volley. This was mostly for shock value because muskets were extremely inaccurate. While the volley would send a wall of musket balls flying at the enemy they were not really effective. The main purpose of the volley was to hold fire from the platoons until the enemy came within range and thereby be more effective. Using the volley helps make up for the inaccuracy, slow rate of fire, and limited range of a weapon.
