Description

The American flag in this picture is the "Grand Union Flag". This flag is considered to be the first national flag of the United States of America. While it had 13 alternating red and white stripes, representative of the Thirteen Colonies. It also had the Union Jack in the upper inner corner. The British Union Jack indicated that the colonies were subjects of the king. In 1777 Congress passed the Flag Act removing the Union Jack and replacing it with 13 stars representing the 13 states.
