This department is no longer active.

The Department of Conservation and Development was established in 1915 to consolidate the State Water-Supply Commission, Forest Park Reservation Commission, the Geological Survey, the Washington Crossing Park Commission, the State Museum Commission, and the Fort Nonsense Park Commission. It was succeeded by the Department of Conservation in 1945 and then by the Department of Conservation and Economic Development, under the New Jersey Constitution of 1947. The Department of Conservation and Economic Development would become the Department of Environmental Protection in 1970.
