Item Methods for the Development of Fish Consumption Advisories in the State of New Jersey(Trenton, N.J. : Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Science and Research, 2024-11) The Interagency Toxics in Biota Risk SubcommitteeFish consumption advisories are public health-protective recommendations for the frequency of consumption of recreationally caught fish that may contain environmental contaminants. These advisories aim to protect public health while also balancing the health benefits of consuming fish, which are a low-fat, high-quality source of protein and nutrients. Contaminants such as mercury or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can bioaccumulate in fish and pose a health risk to the public. Fish consumption advisories provide recommendations to help the public decide on where to fish and which fish are the best choice for consumption. They are based on scientific research into the occurrence, bioaccumulation, human health effects of contaminants, and consumption patterns for recreationally caught fish.
