Governor Florio was born in Brooklyn, NY and was educated at The College of New Jersey (then Trenton State College) and Rutgers University, Camden. In 1970 Florio was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly, where he stayed until 1974. In 1974 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives from New Jersey's 1st congressional district, and served from January 3, 1975 until January 16, 1990. He served as Governor from January 16, 1990 – January 18, 1994.
