It originally was about twelve feet deep but was filled in with rubble when the canal was abandoned. The Morris Canal was designed with lift locks, guard locks, aqueducts that were built over rivers, and inclined planes, enabling barges to pass through the waterways, which differed in elevation by as much as 700 feet. Overcoming such differences in elevation is what made this canal extraordinary In the background is the town Black Smith Shop.Original file name 5926576381_3b5f09a77e_o.jpg4368x2912Each photograph within this collection is protected by copyright and/or related rights.
