The Dutch colonists would nickname this formation "Snake Hill" because at that time a large colony of Black Snakes inhabited Hill. This caused many of these colonists to keep their distance from the hill. Over the years, it has become a landmark for travelers on the New Jersey Turnpike's Eastern Spur.
