Initially they were not welcome because the commanders believed it took the soldiers' minds off the war and besides the army had to feed them. Soon however, the commanders of the army realized their importance because the women participating in army life served as mothers, nurses, maids, cooks, seamstresses, soles, and soldiers. Many of them risked their lives to serve their country.
