From his vantage point he gazed eastward and noticed that the land sloped down and away as far as he could see. He also noticed that the land west of where he was standing sloped toward the Delaware River. Aware that the lake stood on higher ground, he began to wonder if a canal could be built, that would be fed by Lake Hopatcong that would connect Pennsylvania's coal fields with Morris County So the idea of the Morris Canal was born.
