Census records indicated the era of the Morris Canal during the borders were of diverse backgrounds and trades, such as mill workers, farm laborers, telegraph operators and canal workers. By 1837 the hotel was used as a stagecoach inn, with a tavern on the ground floor and dormitory style housing above.
