2025-10-292025-10-292007-11-05https://hdl.handle.net/10929/149628For many years the light in the Sandy Hook lighthouse was provided by burning whale oil in metal lamps and with mirror-like reflectors. Finally in 1822, Augustin Fresnel of France introduced a glass lens that revolutionized the lighting of light- houses. These lenses were made of thick glass prisms that greatly magnified the light into a powerful beam that could be seen for many miles at night.
