This national historic landmark has an engaging background--the original stone farmhouse hosted several sessions of the Continental Congress in 1783; the farmhouse was replaced in 1852 with the current Italianate villa designed by John Notman; and in 1878 the property was deeded to the University for use as the president's residence.
