While being one of the major leaders of New York society, wealth and social standing didnt insulate her from tragedies. On New Years Day in 1896, Florences teenage daughter, Alice Twombly, died of pneumonia at her family country estate in Madison, New Jersey. Ten years later, Florences 18-year-old Harvard-bound son, Hamilton Jr., drowned in a New Hampshire lake while his parents and siblings were living in their summer home in Newport. Four years after the boys death, Hamilton Twombly, Sr. passed awayhis death partly attributed to the devastating loss of his only son.Original file name 153 A Room in Florham (2).jpg3781x2743Each photograph within this collection is protected by copyright and/or related rights.
