An unknown artist created fresco secco (dry fresco) murals on the walls and ceiling. Fresco secco is a technique of painting where the artist soaks dry plaster walls with lime water and then paints the mural while wet leaving a surface film that does not penetrate the walls. There is evidence that the paintings were completed by the time the building was dedicated in 1872. At some point in the churchs early history, laths were attached to the ceiling and walls in order to hang fiberboard which provided insulation and improved acoustics, but it also covered the frescoes. When the wallboards were finally removed, workers were shocked and pleased to find the work of art so well preserved. The Walpack Methodist ChurchWalpack CenterWallpackDelaware Water GapDelaware RiverNational Recreation AreaNPSNational Park ServiceNational ParkThe SkylandsNJ SkylandsThe New Jersey SkylandsNew Jersey SkylandsJersey SkylandsLakelandNew JerseySussex CountyNorthwestern New JerseyJerseyNJThe Garden StatePennsylvaniaPAThe Keystone StateU.S. National Register of Historic PlacesNew Jersey Register of Historic PlacesU.S. Historic district2878 x 2079Each photograph within this collection is protected by copyright and/or related rights.
