The shamrocks honor St. Patrick, patron saint of the pro-cathedral. The color red is a symbol of the Blood of Christ while the blue and silver waves represent the rivers that flow through the archdiocese. The Sacred Heart burning with love for all people is on a field of gold while the letter M represents Our Lady and is taken from the Coat of Arms of John Paul II . It serves as an indication of the bond that exists between the Church of Rome and the church of Newark. The crossed keys are symbols of the Papacy.
