When the British captured New York the Colonial Army attempted to destroy it because it was an aid to British navigation. The attempt failed. As a result for the remainder of the war it was occupied by British Troops. After the war, New York transferred the lighthouse to federal authority. As a result, George Washington asked the Senate to pass a bill accepting the lighthouse and the lands around it. The area was designated as Fort Hancock, a U. S. Army Base at Sandy Hook.Original file name 3405456868_1769a00058_o.jpg4368 x 2761Each photograph within this collection is protected by copyright and/or related rights.
