Abstract

Description

Beauregard was built in 1905 on 30 acres by Louis A. Thebaud, an executive of the Mutual Life Insurance Company. Both Thebaud and his wife, Gertrude, were active members of their community. Thebaud was the founder of the Whippany River Club, which was founded on December 10, 1903. The club originally consisted of 12 millionaires whose combined wealth equaled $68 million. He is famous for being the first man to import Brittany Spaniels to the United States. When there was a misuse of funds discovered, Thebaud and his father-in-law, Richard A. McCurdy, the president of the Mutual Life Insurance Company need to leave, and fast! The two men went to France until the scandal blew over. It was probably while in France that Thebaud was first introduced to a Brittany Spaniel. He sold Beauregard to Miss. Marguerite A. Keasbey, a British woman who spent a considerable amount of money to create the Keasbey Memorial Fund, which was for the education of English children. Miss Keasbey eventually left Beauregard, which was converted into an office building and is now part of a Care One facility.
