Abstract

Description

On August 19, 1779 a Continental Army unit led by Major Light Horse Harry Lee marched from New Bridge to Paulus Hook to launch a nighttime attack on the British controlled fort in what is today downtown Jersey City. Lee and his patriots captured 158 British soldiers, but did not capture the fort. The result, however, was to halt British expansion in the region. Lee was rewarded with a gold medal from the Second Continental Congress, the only non-general to receive such an award during the Revolutionary War. Originally installed in 1903 through the efforts of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Paulus Hook Monument is a 25-foot obelisk of unhewn granite commemorating the Battle of Paulus Hook.
