The Polish community in Jersey City dates back to 1870. In In 1884, the parish of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in downtown Jersey City was created by Bishop Wigger. During the next eight years the parish grew from 500 to almost 10,000 people. The church is architecturally significant as one of the most unique religious edifices in Jersey City. It is a colorful mixture of western and eastern design influences, with its Victorian Gothic exterior, and Byzantine-influenced interior. The building boasts a magnificent Victorian-Gothic brownstone facade and is adorned with stained glass windows in the Munich style.
