Abstract

Description

The centerpiece of the Cathedral is this beautiful altar hand carved from Italian Pietra Santa Marble. The Latin inscription on the altar "Qui manducat hunc panem vivat in aeternum" means, "He who eats this bread will live forever." It is drawn from John's Gospel, 6:51. Chapter 6 of John's Gospel is known as the "Bread of Life Discourse," and is an important text regarding Catholic belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is confected upon this altar. The emblem on the front of the altar contains the letters IHS; it is contraction derived from the Greek word ?????? - Jesus. To either side of this monogram we see the Greek letters Alpha and Omega - the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. This references Christ's self-identification in the Book of Revelation (the last book of the Bible): "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End."
