During the late 1800's and early 1900's the Galicians were living in sever poverty caused by a lack of land and ineffective farming practices. They wee also faced with another problem being drafted into the military. In America factories were in need of cheap labor. Looking for cheap labor the representatives of factory owners and steamship lines traveled to these small villages and offer the people the opportunity to go to the United States and earn enough money to come back and buy a small piece of land, Travelling in overcrowded conditions they made the crossing to America in about 6 weeks. When they arrived in Ellis Island they encountered immigration people who were not use to Slavic names and so family names were sometimes changed. For example my grandfathers name Warhol was changed to Walker Some of these people eventually found their way to Jersey City.
