Abstract

Description

This house was built circa 1754. At the time of the Revolutionary War, it was the home of Garrett Hendrickson, a wealthy landowner and prominent citizen. In April 1777, Hendrickson was elected a company Lieutenant in the newly reorganized 1st Regiment of the Monmouth Militia. On May 27, 1778 a large British and Loyalist raiding party plundered a village in what is now Matawan. When militia that included Hendrickson responded to the call, he was shot in the hand. Hendrickson stayed active with the militia despite the wound to his hand. In June 1780, Hendrickson appointed Joseph Murray, a member of his militia company, to take care of this property. Murray was killed by Loyalist raiders while tending Hendrickson's fields. Hendrickson himself was wounded on June 21 by a different party of raiders; he suffered a gunshot to his ear, and a sword blow to his arm. Due to these wounds, he retired from the militia and received a pension. In February 1782, another group of Loyalist raiders captured Hendrickson, and he was confined for a short time. With this history, it is not surprising that Hendrickson was unforgiving towards the Loyalists after the war ended; he joined a group opposed to the reintegration of Loyalists. in 1787, he signed a petition that called Loyalists "atrocious monsters of wickedness"
