During each of the two winters the Continental Army spent in Morristown, Washington maintained his headquarters in two very different buildings. The first of these was the Arnold Tavern which faced the village green. It was owned by Jacob Arnold, the one time Sheriff of Morris County. In 1777 he was a captain of the Light Horse troop cavalry. It was a three story tavern with a broad central hall that easily accommodated Washington aides and the stream of people who came to see him nonbusiness or military matters. He occupied two rooms over the bar, using the front room as an office and the adjoining room as sleeping quarters.
