The Fords designed this large entrance hallway with its elaborate arch and moldings to impress visitors. During Washingtons stay, this hallway was crowded with people coming and going. Officers arrived with reports; express riders waited to deliver important dispatches; and guards stood watch, or just looked for a place to get warm. If you had official business with the General or his six Aides-de-Camp, you would have been ushered to one of the seats lining the walls. Notice how bare the hall looks. As Continental troops had a tendency towards pilfering, Mrs. Ford removed all furnishings and accessories of value. Imagine this foyer filled with visitors and military men waiting to see General Washington to discuss the War and the help needed. Among those visitors was the Marquis de Lafayette brings news of help from France.
