The Commander and Chief's Guard was known as the "Life Guard. These men formed a distinct drop of carefully selected infantry and light horse dragoons assigned to headquarters to protect the Commander-in- Chief. The members of the Life Guard seemed to have been composed of native Americans. . In 1777 it appeared that its members were Virginians with a few Marylanders . After 1778, however, the men seemed to have been selected from throughout the army as an attempt was madero select members from throughout the army in order to have at least one member from each state.
