Abstract
Description
Between each of the stations are Han carved oak statues. These are figures of saints who preached about Christ and his mercy.
This is a statue St. Hyacinth (1185-1257). He was a Polish Dominican. He entered the newly-founded Dominican Order and received the habit from St. Dominic himself, its founder. Subsequently, Hyacinth journeyed across Poland preaching with a small band of Dominicans and founding Dominican priories. In this statue, Hyacinth wears his priestly vestments and carries two objects: a ciborium containing the Eucharist and a statue of the Virgin Mary. These symbols refer to a famed story from the saint's life. He was in Kiev when the Tartars sacked the town, and received news of the danger just as he concluded celebrating Mass.
Without even taking the time to remove his vestments, Hyacinth fled the town. He carried precious cargo from the church with him: the Eucharist and a statue of Mary. It is said that Mary spoke to him during his escape from Kiev, and even enabled him to cross the river Dnieper by walking on the surface of the water.
