When the General Assembly opened in 1891 it contained one of the most modern and novel inventions in New Jersey; an electric chandelier. Thomas Edison. The Edison Electric Light Company installers the electric lighting system and fixtures.. The lighting chandelier contained 66 light bulbs and weighed approximately 1,240 pounds. It was designed so it could be lowered to the ground floor for maintenance. The masks surrounding the two thick bands on the chandelier are believed to represent Jupiter, the Roman god of thunder, lightning, and rain. Jupiter was also referred to as the god of destiny, justice, virtue, and law.
