General Lee arrived at the site shortly after the capture of the bridge. Since he had no information regarding the location of the main British Army, he listens to his staff 's advice and does not move his troops across the bridge, thereby losing over an hour and the advantage he gained. Lee finally would panic and ordered troops under his command to retreat.
