Abstract

Description

For two agonizing winters , Morristown sheltered the main body of the Continental Army under General George Washington. Note the Continental Army would spend two winters in Morristown on only one in Valley Forge. Morristown offered Washington and the army protection from the British forces in New York City, only 30 miles to the east. This was a strategic choice for the Continental Army. In 1777 the Arnold Tavern offered Washington a headquarters building. In the meantime the soldiers sought shelter wherever they could find it. As a result they lived in public buildings, private homes, stables, barns, sheds, and even tents. The Arnold Tavern was demolished in 1864. A lost to the history of New Jersey.
