The parish was established in 1842 to serve the needs of working-class German-speaking immigrants who worked in Newark's factories. The first building was a wooden church which was destroyed by fire in 1856 by anti-Catholic Know Nothing elements. On that date the members of the American Protestant Association staged a grand parade in Newark. As the parade passed St. Mary's violence erupted. The marchers broke ranks and headed for St. Mary's tearing the doors off the church, shattering the stained glass windows, destroying the organ, ripping down pictures, overturning pews and reducing the statues to rubble. At one point shots rang out and one Irish Catholic Thomas McCarthy was fatally wounded. Today St. Mary's is entrusted to the monks of the Order of Saint Benedict who continue to provide spiritual and academic guidance to the community through the parish and Saint Benedict's Preparatory School.
