Abstract

Description

High above the Speaker's rostrum is a carved statue of the State Seal. The Seal was completed in 1777 by Pierre Eugene du Simitiere based on the designs of Francis Hopkinson. Mr. Hopkinson was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He also designed early versions of the American Flag. The Great Seal includes two female figures: Liberty and Prosperity, the Roman goddess of agriculture. The horse's head represents strength and commerce; the helmet symbolizes independence, and the three plows decorate the blue shield in honor of New Jersey's agriculture history.
