Abstract
Description
The Park Theater was built 1931 as an extension of the Holy Family Church complex by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.
The Park is one of few remaining of the early big theaters that once dotted the North Jersey theater landscape still in operation. The centerpiece is its vaulted 1,400-seat auditorium.
Each year during Lent a production of a Passion Play depicting the last days of Jesus Christ was given in this theater. This Passion play was based on the traditional Oberammergau Passion Play from Bavaria.
Today this building is still owned by the archdiocese with a long-term lease with the non-profit Performing Arts Center.
