Abstract
Description
From the period 1855 to 1962, Laurel Hill served many purposes which included:
- A Hudson County penitentiary, where inmates were forced to work in a quarry,
- Two almshouses that provided services to the poor and elderly.
- A Contagious Diseases Hospital, as well as a Tuberculosis Sanatorium,
- and finally from the period 1873 - 1939, a mental institution known locally as the "Hudson County Lunatic Asylum".
