Description
The red umbrella to the left and this bellpole, called a tintinnabulum, are emblems that indicate the cathedral's rank as a minor basilica. In medieval times, the umbrella and bellpole were used in procession when a pope visited a basilica. The pope confers the special title of "minor basilica" on a church, indicating special honor and prominence. It was Pope John Paul II who designated the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart as a minor basilica when he visited here on October 4, 1995.
