Abstract

Description

To understand the encampment of 1779-1780 one has to understand the weather in Morristown during that winter. The winter of 1778 -1780 was the snowiest on record for much of New Jersey and the Northeast. That is only because official records do not exist from the winter of 1779-1780, when 28 separate snow storms hit Morristown. George Washington wrote "... The oldest people now living in this Country do not remember so hard a winter as the one we are now emerging from. "
