The pedestal refers to the stone structure sitting between the bottom of the statue and on top of the old Fort Wood, a star-shaped war fort. It supports the statue while also increasing her height. It was designed by Richard Morris Hunt. When it was built in the 1880s it was the largest concrete structure in the whole country, weighing 27,000 tons. The balcony of the pedestal offers visitors a surprisingly great 360 view which includes New York Harbor, Ellis Island, Jersey City, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and dozens of other buildings.
