dc.description | Helmers' opened in 1936 and was owned by a family of German immigrants, the Helmers. At the time, the city had a very high German and German American population. Greg Lueders' grandfather, who immigrated from Bremerhaven, handled the restaurant's books and bought the business in 1949. He handled the business, and his wife, a baker in Jersey City, manned the kitchen. t had the best open face steak sandwich, a terrific Whiskey Sour and an outstanding fresh Strawberry Shortcake. When it closed its doors Hoboken lost a great restaurant and a piece of its history. | |
