Under pressure to produce more energy from the Passaic River and the Falls, the S.U.M built this hydroelectric power plant beside the falls. In the main structure of the building is a turbine hall, a single room to house the four turbines and generators. It continued generating until January 1969, when it was decommissioned following a flood. During the 1970's it became evident that there was a need for more domestic power production. As a result, the plant was renovated and recommissioned. The plant reopened on December 30, 1986, and was formally rededicated on June 29th, 1987. Today, most visitors to the park are unaware that the powerhouse is active.
