dc.descriptionLater in 1777, St. Clair was given command of Fort Ticonderoga in northeastern New York.and then went on to become the president of the Confederation Congress, which appointed him as the first governor of the Northwest Territory. In October 1791, St. Clair led 1,400 men deep into the Ohio wilderness to subdue the natives. November 4, 1791, St. Clair�s men were attacked by a combined force of Miami, Shawnee, and Delaware warriors which resulted in killing or wounding more than 900 of his men. As a result of this action President Washington condemned him as �worse than a murderer. This caused the first investigation of the executive branch under the new United States Constitution. He was forced to resign from the army and Thomas Jefferson removed him from his position as Governor of the Ohio Territory .
