dc.descriptionThe Sussex County Courthouse was built in 1765 in the Greek Revival Temple Style. It is still used for judicial proceedings which makes it among the oldest active courthouses in the United States. During the American Revolution 8 loyalists were being held here. It was successfully attacked by a group of loyalists under the leadership of British Lieutenant James Moody freeing the prisoners. In 1847 the interior of the building was destroyed by fire. Since the outer wall remained intact only the interior of the building was rebuilt.
