Abstract

Description

It would be the scene of a major event in baseball history when on April 18, 1946 during a game between the Jersey City Giants and the Montreal Royals. It was during that game that Jackie Robinson broke the color line in baseball becoming the first Black to play on an all white team in baseball. Because it was bigger than Ebbets Field it was used for 15 "home" games by the Brooklyn Dodgers during their last two seasons in Brooklyn seven in 1956 and eight in 1957. In addition, it was used for championship boxing matches, top-name musical acts, an annual championship drum and bugle corps competition, professional wrestling matches, important regional high school football games, college football games, minor league football games, soccer matches and even NASCAR races. Unfortunately, the stadium was demolished in 1985 and replaced by a housing development.
