dc.descriptionThe Campbell-Christie House � Built about 1774 by Jacob Campbell. It originally stood in New Milford, and was moved to River Edge in 1977. Jacob Served as a private in the Bergen County Militia, and this house suffered damages during the Revolutionary War. The Bergen County Historical Society describes the house as "a sandstone center-hall 4 room house with a full cellar and full garret/attic capped with a gambrel roof." The Christie part of the house's name, comes from the family that lived here after the Campbells. A blacksmith named John Christie bought the house in 1795. His son J. Walter Christie was born here on May 6, 1865, achieved fame as a mechanical genius and inventor. At 16 years of age, he worked on pioneer submarines and developed turret tracks and gun mounts for battleships. He built and raced cars, holding American and world speed records before being severely injured in a crash in 1907. He later invented automotive front-wheel drive, used in the manufacture of fire trucks. but is best known as the �father of the modern tank.� He died at Falls Church, Virginia, in 1944
