On August 28, 1945, Branch Rickey, the president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers hired Jackie Robinson. Rickey informed Jackie he would be playing for the Montreal Royals of the International League, a Dodgers farm team, in 1946 and then with the Dodgers. With that agreement, Rickey and Robinson made history. The Royals first game in the 1946 season was scheduled against the Jersey City Giants in Jersey Citys Roosevelt Stadium. Robinsons debut on April 18, 1946 in a game against the Jersey City Giants in Jersey Citys Roosevelt Stadium. The official paid attendance that day at Roosevelt Stadium was 51,873. Jackie certainly did his part to make the day memorable. Nervous, he grounded out in his first at-bat. His three-run home run in his second at-bat set the stage for the memorable photo of George Shuba shaking his hand as he crossed home plate. The statue of Jackie Robinson in Jersey City, New Jersey is located at Journal Square at the entrance to the Journal Square Transportation Center. It depicts Jackie Robinson with both arms outstretched, his catching hand gloved. The inscription on the plaque at its foot uses the name Jack Roosevelt Robinson (1919 - 1972) and quotes the player himself: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.
