The Springfield Presbyterian Church is located on Morris Avenue in downtown Springfield, in Union County. The congregation was first established in 1745 and the current church was built in 1791. The church had been used to store ammunition for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. During the battle Presbyterian Minister, James Caldwell, famously helped. Upon noticing that the company had run out of wadding, the paper used to hold the powder in the barrel of a gun, he ran to a nearby church and procured a pile of hymn books for the job. Finally during the Battle the church was burned by British and Loyalist troops passing through the township on their way to nearby Hobart Gap.
