dc.description | The Springfield Minuteman Monument stands in front of The First Presbyterian Church. It overlooks the area that saw much of the fighting on June 23, 1780. It is located in the smallest New Jersey State Park measuring five feet square. It honors the 500 New Jersey Militia members that defeated the 6,000-member British troops ending their attempt to capture Morristown and defeat the Continental Army. This was the last major battle in the north, with the British strategy shifting to the southern states. Unfortunately Springfield became known as the "forgotten victory. | |
