Abstract
Description
The First PresbyterianChurch was founded by the Pilgrims in October 1664. This was less than 50 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and 20 years before the Quakers founded Philadelphia.
The Pilgrims built their first meeting house on this site shortly thereafter. Elizabeth City would become the first capital of the State of New Jersey and the First Colonial Assembly met in the building on May 26, 1668. This was the first and only English speaking congregation in New Jersey for many years.
