dc.description | Known for its stately homes and notable families living on the Park's western edge, the area formerly known as South Common was renamed to Lincoln Park after President Abraham Lincoln who visited the area in 1861. At one time Lincoln Park was the home of some of Newark's business and cultural elite. In the early 20th century, the Lincoln Park area was a neighborhood of nightclubs known as "The Coast." It was a center of jazz and a red-light district or "tenderloin" formerly called the Coast, after San Francisco's neighborhood the Barbary Coast. Today, this district is slowly being revitalized by The Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District. | |
