Description
Locate high above the Hudson River on the cliffs of the Palisades is Fort Lee Historical Park.
In 1776 General George Washington issued orders to General Mercer to erect a fort on the west side of the Hudson River. This fort was originally Fort Constitution. Its name would later be changed to Fort Lee in honor of the General Lee
At the same time another fort was built directly across the Hudson River named Fort Washington. The objective of these forts was to protect the lower Hudson from British warships.
